Change2Task: From Repository Changes to Executable Coding Agent Tasks and Environments

scope and result
Change2Task converts merged pull requests into executable coding-agent tasks on healthy modern revisions of the same repository. It preserves developer evidence while constructing a task state, executable oracle and restoration state. The abstract reports: âStarting from 1,130 source changes eligible for construction, Change2Task achieves 79.6% verified task construction success across these task families.â (Abstract, PDF p. 1). The five families are Bug Fix, Feature Addition, Test Generation, API Migration and Security Repair. The final corpus has 900 paired tasks: 500 Bug Fix and 100 of each other family (Experiment Setup, PDF p. 4). Inference: The evidence is lifecycle execution, scope checks and source-to-modern fidelity, not formal proof.
technique 1: derive evidence and freeze a healthy base
Start from a merged PR and a fixed descendant revision. Extract the PR description, implementation patch and executable checks. Classify checks into target checks, which expose the changed condition, and regression checks, which protect nearby behavior; record affected components and edit extent in a source-change profile. Reject candidates when the condition is ambiguous, checks cannot execute, or the changed condition cannot be separated from unrelated modifications (Deriving Task Evidence, PDF p. 3). Select a healthy modern base H from the same lineage, freeze its commit hash, and require that it supports a clean checkout, runtime dependencies and services, and executable checks, and that the mapped target and regression checks pass on H before construction (Establishing the Modern Task Base, PDF p. 3). The paper states that Change2Task âoperates after the base is runnableâ: a native repository configuration or an external preparation tool builds the environment.
The paper states: âTarget checks expose the condition to be reconstructed; regression checks protect surrounding behavior; the source change profile records the affected components and edit extent.â (Deriving Task Evidence, PDF p. 3). It also says that it âselects a fixed descendant revision from the same repository lineage as the healthy modern base Hâ (Establishing the Modern Task Base, PDF p. 3). The resulting task specification contains the agent goal, expected output, executable oracle and permitted edit scope. Adapters instantiate an unfixed bug, missing feature, failing test, obsolete API or sandboxed vulnerability (Establishing the Modern Task Base, PDF pp. 3-4).
Inference: For Verus, the source-change profile can identify the Rust functions, contracts and proof lemmas to preserve across repository evolution. The executable oracle should include compilation and Verus verification, while target checks can expose a missing invariant and regression checks protect unrelated proofs. This is an inference; Change2Task uses repository tests and does not claim theorem-prover soundness.
technique 2: escalate construction routes
Construct a task patch D so C=apply(H,D) exposes the intended maintenance condition while preserving unrelated behavior. Escalate only when an earlier route fails.
- Patch Reversal reverses the source patch when it remains compatible with modern context, preserving the closest structural link.
- Code Mapping locates a unique post-change block in a modern file, normalizes indentation, replaces it with the pre-change form, reparses, and applies scope and executable checks. One structure-guided attempt is allowed.
- Agent Reconstruction gives historical evidence, modern context, task specification and prior feedback to a construction agent. It accepts only patches passing apply, syntax and scope checks, ranks survivors by source-profile fidelity and edit complexity, and allows at most four attempts.
The paper says: âConstruction escalates only when an earlier level cannot produce a valid candidate.â (Constructing the Task State, PDF p. 4). For reconstruction, âA failed candidate returns structured evidence identifying an unmet target condition, broken regression check, restoration failure, or fidelity deviation.â (Constructing the Task State, PDF p. 4). Cases without a defensible modern behavior host are rejected. Appendix C.2 (PDF p. 11) adds that Level 2 resolves the file, requires exactly one exact or indentation-normalized occurrence of the post-change block, and excludes pure additions, pure deletions, import-only changes and missing modern files.
Inference: VL can use the same escalation for verified Rust: first reverse a known change, then map matching Rust blocks, then ask an agent to repair the current code with explicit Verus diagnostics. The candidate must remain bounded by the task scope and pass full-crate verification after reconstruction.
technique 3: lifecycle, scope and fidelity validation
Validate each candidate in three states. On healthy H, target and regression checks pass. On task C, target checks fail while regression checks pass. After restoration patch G, both pass on HâČ. Reject unstable repeated runs. The paper summarizes this as: âThe target checks therefore pass, fail, and pass across the three states, while regression checks pass throughout.â (Lifecycle and Scope Validation, PDF p. 4). The scope check permits only artifacts allowed by the task specification and stops protected checks or metadata from manufacturing validity. The fidelity check compares the source PR with the modern realization by affected components, edit extent and check surface, rejecting scope collapse (a substantial source change becomes trivial) or scope inflation (a narrow change needs broad unrelated edits). Appendix C.4 (PDF p. 11) lists the compared dimensions as files, hunks, changed lines, symbols, target checks and regression checks, with an aggregate score of at least 0.65 required. Accepted records freeze H, D, G, task specification, checks and provenance.
Inference: This lifecycle is directly useful for Verus benchmark generation. A target proof obligation should be intentionally broken in C, restored in HâČ, and regression lemmas should pass in all states. Verus verification output is stronger than runtime tests for safety properties, but the same three-state discipline prevents a benchmark from being accidentally solvable without the intended change.
evidence and denominators
Across 1,130 eligible changes, 900 were finalized, a 79.6% recovery rate (RQ1, PDF p. 5). Construction levels contributed 95 Level-1 tasks (10.6%), 190 Level-2 tasks (21.1%) and 615 Level-3 tasks (68.3%) out of 900 (RQ1 text on Figure 4, PDF p. 5). On the matched 621 Bug Fix candidates, direct reversal recovered 81/621 (13.0%, 95% CI [10.6,15.9]), SWE-smith PR Mirror 387/621 (62.3%, CI [58.4,66.0]), and Change2Task 500/621 (80.5%, CI [77.2,83.4]) (Table 1, PDF p. 5; the paper labels these 95% CIs and the RQ1 text says Wilson intervals are in Appendix E). The 500-versus-387 comparison is within that same 621-candidate setting.
Paired evaluation uses 4 agents on 900 tasks, giving 3,600 matched agent-task pairs; each branch solved 1,478/3,600 (41.1%); raw agreement was 89.7%, Cohenâs Îș 0.787, positive agreement 87.4%, Jaccard overlap 77.6%, and the paired solve-rate difference 0.0 points with 95% interval [â1.1,1.1] (RQ3, PDF p. 6). Reusing 388 modern bases for 900 tasks reduced setup time from 3,240 to 1,349 hours (58.4%) and retained storage from 5,580 to 1,607 GB (71.2%) (RQ4, Table 3, PDF p. 7). These figures concern agent outcomes and infrastructure cost, not proof correctness.
limits and product threat
The applicability boundary requires a traceable source PR, identifiable intent, a healthy descendant that still hosts the behavior, executable checks and a bounded edit policy (RQ2 audit paragraph, PDF p. 6; Appendix A, PDF p. 10). Thirty-five of 1,130 eligible changes remained unresolved even after RepoLaunch made another 195 historical revisions executable, raising coverage from 900 to 1,095 (RQ4, PDF p. 7). Agent reconstruction uses Claude Code Opus 4.8 with at most four attempts; evaluation uses several coding agents, each with one clean run per branch (Experiment Setup, PDF p. 5; Appendix D.1, PDF p. 11). Inference: threat to agent-written verified Rust is moderate. Change2Task offers a strong provenance and regression harness for generating Verus tasks, but its evidence is test- and agent-based. VL should reuse frozen bases, three-state lifecycle, scope and fidelity checks and structured failure feedback; it should add Verus checks wherever formal guarantees are required.
techniques for the catalog
- evidence extraction: derive target checks, regression checks and a source-change profile from a merged PR
- healthy-base selection: freeze a runnable descendant revision and require baseline checks to pass
- adaptive construction: escalate from patch reversal to code mapping to bounded agent reconstruction
- three-state lifecycle: require target passâfailâpass and continuous regression passes
- scope and fidelity checks: reject protected-file edits, scope collapse/inflation and mismatched modern patches
- paired evaluation: compare historical and reconstructed branches with solve rates and agreement statistics Checked 2026-10-17 against the full paper by a Claude agent (mid-paper quote: âReuse lowers amortized environment time from 3.60 h to 1.50 h and storage from 6.20 GB to 1.79 GB per task.â): I read the whole paper text, including the appendices, and checked every quotation, the 1,130/900/79.6% recovery, the 95/190/615 route split, Table 1 (81, 387, 500 of 621), the 3,600-pair agreement statistics, the 388-base reuse figures, the 35 unresolved cases and the technique steps against it; I changed page references to PDF pages (the study had cited wrong pages), replaced a spliced quotation about the healthy descendant with the paperâs own sentence, removed the claim that Change2Task installs dependencies (the paper says it starts after the base is runnable), corrected the 35-unresolved statement (it is after RepoLaunch), added the Appendix C.2 and C.4 details, and reworded the scope and fidelity validation terms as prerequisite checks; I did not check the figures (Figures 4-7 were not inspected as images), the reference list, or the appendix tables beyond the numbers cited.
